Obverse: Uniformed bust left. in peaked cap, Commander of German Afrika Korps.
Reverse: "To the German heroes in North Africa." Incongruous double-hump Bactrian camel before stele inscribed SOLLVM SCHLACHT VND VOR TOBRVK "Battle at Sollum and before Tobruk." 1941.
Commander of the German troops in North Africa 1941-43. His initial successes were turned into defeat after El Alamein in 1942. Called the "Desert Fox'" he later commanded German troops in Northern France. He was forced to take poison by the Nazis for his alleged part in the plot against Hitler's life. One of the most respected German Generals, a brilliant strategist, he commanded the "Ghost" Division in the France campaign in 1940. His British enemies in North Africa honored him as a hard hitting but fair and decent opponent.
