Description

1939 Karl Goetz Medal (Coin) OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA

OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA
Country: Germany
Year: 1939
Material: Copper, Silver Plated
Shape: Round
Style: Commemorative Medal (Coin)
Type: Restrike
Obverse: Goetz used the same design with a change of the inscription as he had used for the Polish pattern of K-399 in 1928.
Reverse: "Undamaged under German protection." He superimposed a swastika over the Polish eagle, symbolizing' as he states' that the shrine of pilgrimage remained undamaged throughout the war and stood from now on under the protection of the "swastika."
There is some very bitter irony in this design due to the fact that for the Polish people this shrine meant a symbol of national survival.
This is an unusually shaped swastika, is there some other significance attributted to how it appears?
